Challenge 3 Practice applying a gender lens

To foster an understanding of the basic concepts of gender analysis, and how the results can be applied to integrate gender in key areas of OHCHR's work
In order to confront these challenges, participants will be led by the following learning objectives:

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the basic concepts and the importance of gender analysis and gender sensitive language
  2. Be introduced to guidance in integrating gender in OHCHR's work
  3. Try applying gender perspective in a context of relevance to your own work.

Exercises (choose one or more)
  1. Apply gender analysis to a human rights situation
  2. Revisit a Human Rights Council Resolution using a gender-sensitive lens
  3. Apply the basic steps of a gender audit

Last slide - what other steps can I take now?:

  • Provide guidance on gender in planning and programming
  • Guidance on gender budgeting
  • Video on gender in personal life
  • Guidance on gender considerations in procurement processes and recruitment, including the granting of equal consideration to male and female candidates in the recruitment of consultants

(Areas of work to represent: Human Rights Council and Special Procedures, Treaty bodies; Research and thematic work (gender sensitive language in public report), Field operation and technical cooperation)

Generic gender analysis draft questions (guidance is needed on how the learner should go about reflecting on each question, what information they may need to seek in order to answer the questions and what sources or individuals they might consult to obtain this information):
  1. What is the issue at stake and how is it affecting women and men differently?
  2. Do women (or men) tend to be more exposed to particular types of unequal treatment?
  3. What measures to you have to take to ensure that men and women are treated equally

What is the best way to divide thematically - and strengthen field perspective?
  • Gender sensitive language, public report
  • expert meeting
  • monitoring in field
  • project implementation
  • etc
or
  • Internal processes
  • monitoring conduct interviews with victims,...
  • research
  • standard setting
  • advocacy
  • implementation on the ground
  • Apply basics of gender analysis to HR situation
  • Now take a step back and apply the same questions to your own work
